Signifiers:
Instructional
These are interfaces that tell the user what action they should or should not take. We chose this signifier because anxiety can sometimes be induced by uncertainty; therefore, these interfaces may help those with anxiety-induced insomnia.
Comforting
These are interfaces that tell help make the user comfortable. We chose this signifier because it is relatable to our user group (insomniacs). Comfort aids insomniacs in sleeping (this may the right temperature, a sense of security, etc.).
Media
These are interfaces that allow the user to consume media. While things such as screen-time may be detrimental for Insomniacs, media can serve as a form of distraction for insomniacs (distractions from fears, stress, insomnia itself, etc.).
Activities
Oragnizational
Infrastructural
These are interfaces that provide the user with an activity. We chose this signifier because, much like the other signifiers, it can also be a form of distraction for insomniacs. Thinking about insomnia and sleep can often make insomnia worse so distraction is beneficial.
These are interfaces that aid the user with organizing their life. We chose this signifier because we know that insomnia can often be caused by anxiety. This anxiety may be brought on by uncertainty of the future, where things are, and more.
These are interfaces that give users access to larger infrastructures (gas grid, electrical grid, internet, etc.). We chose this signifier because access to these infrastructures makes life less stressful and easier. This can be beneficial to our user group.
Food
These are interfaces that provide the user with access to food. Unlike the other signifiers, this one can be detrimental or helpful to insomniacs. In some cases, an unhealthy diet can lead to insomnia while a healthy diet can help to treat insomnia.
